September is education and literacy month.

Did you know 17% of the world’s adult population is illiterate? That’s hundreds of millions of human beings who have drastically fewer opportunities in life because they lack a skill many of us take for granted.

Rotary supports the education of disadvantaged people all over the world through: mentoring students, teacher training, adult literacy, Rotary scholarships, educating refugees, coaching teachers, and unique programs like Schools 4 Freedom.

Knowledge truly is power. The gift of literacy is eternal and the access to help millions of people uplift their lives.

Education and literacy and not just challenges “over there,” but right here at home, too. Our district is full of clubs engaged in supporting the literacy and education of their community members through: dictionary giveaways, book drives, student mentoring, scholarships and more.

Take time this month to consider how you and your club approach the support of education and literacy in your area and share about it on the District 5190 Facebook page, so we can all see the amazing work you’re doing in our own backyard.

See you next month.

Together we are all one!

Global Grant Scholar: Sandrena Ruth Frischer

Sandrena Ruth Frischer is thrilled to be a 2022-2023 Rotary Global Grant Scholar and pursue a Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) in Population Health at the University of Oxford in the UK. With support from Rotary International and District 5190, her research will work closely with a long term research study in Uganda on schistosomiasis - an infection caused by a parasitic worm that can cause multiple chronic health issues - to explore how biomedical research in low- and middle-income countries can ethically support health systems strengthening.

Sandrena is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area in California. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies from UC Berkeley, and a Master of Science in Public Health for Development from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), where she studied as a Rotary Global Grant Scholar in 2018-2019 sponsored by District 5150. During her master’s research at the LSHTM, Sandrena had the opportunity to work with a social science research team in Sierra Leone, West Africa and research Ebola vaccine trial participant experiences with contraception as a condition of vaccine trial participation. This research sparked her curiosity for how biomedical research can ethically and sustainably engage with health systems in Sub-Saharan Africa, ultimately inspiring her doctoral study.

Prior to beginning her PhD studies at Oxford, Sandrena managed field and data operations for a multi-year scientific study on Lassa Fever in Liberia, conducted in partnership with Phebe Hospital, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia. Previously, Sandrena worked in healthcare access for undocumented migrants in the United States, in health equity and systems strengthening in Liberia, and as a Community Health Specialist with the United States Peace Corps in Ecuador. Outside of her professional pursuits, Sandrena enjoys cooking, learning new languages, and practicing yoga, having completed her yoga teacher training in India in 2019.

AREA 10 UPDATE

A great meeting was had on August 2nd, showing family and friends how to build bird houses at Rotarian Skip Bolton’s cabinet workshop. The meeting was followed up with a potluck/swim time at Rotarians Lucy and Dennis Rechel’s home.

Yerington Rotary Club had a very busy August with hard work at the Lyon County Fair the week of August 19th - 21st. Yerington Rotary District Grant that funded ADA Porta Potty and the Fiesta Dance Area was well received. The new cement for dancing kept the community party going each night of the fair until the wee hours of the night.
