The Holiday Season is behind us. But the holiday spirit lives on! We should always look to bring joy to others throughout the year. Serving….to change lives, happens every day in our Rotary world. Making a difference in people’s lives is what we do best.
Vocational Service is the recognition of all occupations and the contribution of your vocational talents in solving the problems of society, as well as meeting the needs of our communities. I encourage club members to put their skills to work as a Rotary volunteer. Please refer to DGN Stacy Graham’s article in this newsletter for ideas on how to grow Rotary through Vocational Service.
Rotary International Founder Paul Harris said, “Each Rotarian is a connecting link between the idealism of Rotary and their trade or profession.” It is the ideal of Rotary to put Rotary to work where you work and into all your life.
Don and I have now visited almost all the clubs in our district. We have one left to visit in January. I am in awe of the awesome Rotarians we’ve met in every club! It has been a pleasure to meet you and to get acquainted as friends. Each of the clubs are serving to change lives in various ways. And I’m so very proud to be associated with you!

WHAT CAN ROTARY CLUBS DO: Identify and mentor candidates. Many candidates are often self-selected as this group is highly motivated, intelligent and successful. Most often they research the Global Grant Scholarship program on-line and then contact a Rotary Club in their area of residence, work or study. Clubs can also promote the scholarship and invite applications by recruiting and inviting previous outbound Rotary Youth Exchange students, RYLA and Interact students and previous club college scholarship recipients. Rotaract members are also prime candidates for the Global Scholarships. The Key is to respond with basic information and begin to qualify the candidates and guide the application process to the District Scholarship Committee.
Global Grant Scholarships provide up to $32,000 to offset the cost of graduate study for no less than one and no more than four years of study in a foreign country. The scholar’s area of study, professional goals and previous work or volunteer experience, must strongly align with one of Rotary International’s Seven Areas of Focus”:
Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution
Disease Prevention and Treatment
Water and Sanitation
Maternal and Child Health
Basic Education and Literacy
Economic and Community Development
Supporting the Environment
The ideal candidate will “demonstrate a long-term commitment to measurable, sustainable change” and have concrete ideas for advancing in his or her chosen field. Further, the ideal candidate will possess excellent leadership skills and potential for further growing in leadership and will be familiar with Rotary projects and meetings. The candidate will have excelled in academics and/or a vocation. The candidate will present himself professionally and show a commitment to community service. The candidate will also have realistic well-defined goals, follow The Four-Way Test and be conscientious about meeting deadlines. A Global Grant Scholar cannot be a Rotarian, spouse or a lineal descendant of a Rotarian or a person employed by a Rotary club, District or Rotary international.

Our 2021-2022 Rotary year is seeing us get back to some semblance of normalcy and I am hopeful that many clubs will participate in the 2021-2022 Music Contest. Randy Rascati and I have been busy updating the forms and I am pleased to announce all the information is now uploaded to the District Website and available to access. Here is a link to all the information.
Please get with your club programs chair and schedule your club contest for completion by February 28, 2022. Area Contests should be completed no later than March 31, 2022. This scheduling allows for ample time for clubs and participants to plan. All Area winners must be available to participate in the district competition at District Conference. District competition is at 2:00 pm and the district winner will perform at the keynote dinner that evening.
A reminder on some of the basic participant qualifications:
Be a high school student (grades 9-12) or a home-schooled/non-traditionally schooled student, ages 14 to 18, located in District 5190 with a love for music.
Have a reasonable ability to play a musical instrument.
Be sponsored by a District 5190 Rotary Club.
Be able to commit, if Club winner, to attend and compete in the Area contest. If winner of Area contest, be able to commit to attend and compete at District Conference at time TBA
STUDENTS MAY ONLY COMPETE IN ONE CLUB CONTEST EACH YEAR!
THIS IS A SOLO/INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION: Contestant will be responsible for an accompaniment, if needed, but only their individual performance will be graded

NEVADA COUNTY TOY RUN
WAS A SUCCESS!!!
Thanks to the persistence of Grass Valley South Rotarian Shannon Buehler (the club's community service coordinator) and her daughter, the Nevada County Toy Run was once again held this year.
Thirteen club Rotarians greeted 1,300 bikers from throughout Northern California, who rode through the towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City with toys to donate. Over 1,000 children and teens were the beneficiaries of this generous event.
Also enough food was collected to provide food bags for 400 families.
Shannon is surely a Person of Action and the Rotary Club of Grass Valley practices Service Above Self!

GOT CRUTCHES?
Where would you go if you need crutches, a walker, wheelchair or various other mobility items in your community?
In South Lake Tahoe we found there is no consolidated source for these items, new or used. Thrift stores, a pharmacy, Facebook or garage sales seemed to be the source but the supply was sketchy at best.
Seeing the need our club supported the idea of creating RotaryMobility.com, a single source for the collecting, storing, and providing used medical mobility equipment to those in need.
The program has grown far beyond our expectations. In the first year we have served 91 individuals with 127 pieces of equipment having a retail value of over $11,000. For most of these “customers” this is their first contact with Rotary.
With much regret, we are announcing that the Healthy Water Project set to take place next spring is no longer an option at this time. This unexpected development in our plans is due mostly to the serious impacts of COVID on residents in rural areas of Los Barriles, Baja, Mexico and subsequent impact on the sustainability of the project. All Rotarians in our district are being notified.
We are considering alternatives with a different district grant. We will get back to you with our new project in January 2022.

VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH
Happy New Year and thank you for taking your time to read this article. As we start the New Year it only seems fitting that it is also Vocational Service Month, a month that we can work on making some resolutions, not just for ourselves, but also our Rotary Club Members.
On a faithful day in 1905, four men from different classifications came together to form what is now called Rotary International. I personally like to think of Rotary as the first business networking group ever formed in the United States of America. Vocational Service has long been a part of our great history and one that we seem not to use as much anymore. So why not make a resolution to our wonderful Rotary Club Members and highlight what is considered after family, the second most important thing in one’s life. After all, if it wasn’t for our vocations, we may never have joined Rotary. If we didn’t make money in our vocations, then we might not give to the Foundation. And when we look at our clubs from the outside, we see a wide diversity of ages and classifications, which helps in our brand. If you didn’t know we are the only non-profit service organization in the world that highlights Vocational Service. I hope you have had a
chance to read the Objects of Rotary and see how much vocational service is listed.
The 2022 Rotary International Convention 4-8 June in Houston, Texas, USA, is fast approaching, and so is the deadline for attendees to take advantage of the reduced registration rate. After two years, this is an opportunity for us to meet new friends and reunite with old friends.
The convention organizers have been working tirelessly to prepare a world-class live program for everyone in the Rotary World. Now we need your help to promote the Convention – to your club members at meetings and through all your communications throughout your district.
