Locals Stuff Two School Buses with Supplies to Support Students
Outstanding community response as WCSD prepares for Back to School Expo

Reno, NV. (August 12, 2022) – The Washoe County School District (WCSD), the Salvation Army of Washoe County and the Rotary Club of Reno would like to thank the community and two local Walmart stores for their generosity in participating in “Stuff The Bus” events to benefit the students and teachers of WCSD.

Supplies donated during the events will benefit the school district’s Children in Transition (CIT) program, which provides support for students experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness—giving them the opportunity to achieve the same high-quality academic standards as any other student. The CIT program works to eliminate barriers to education and address issues such as transportation to school, nutrition, health services and the need for school supplies.

Remaining supplies will be distributed to students at WCSD’s Back to School Expo on Saturday, August 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Reno Town Mall, located at the corner of South Virginia and West Peckham Lane. The Expo will also feature a job fair and provide families with information pertinent to the upcoming 2022-2023 school year regarding school meals, transportation, registration and more. All families can attend the Expo, where district staff is ready to help answer questions and offer resources to ensure students are prepared to start the new school year.

The district, Salvation Army, and the Rotary Club of Reno would like to extend a special thanks to the team at the Lemmon Valley Walmart for arranging a donation of more than $7,000 worth of school supplies in addition to what was donated by community members shopping there.

Rotary Global Grant Story

by: Evani Radiya-Dixit

As a 2021 Rotary Global Grant Scholar, I spent nine months in the beautiful and quaint city of Cambridge, England, where a warm day felt like California in winter. There, I conducted research at the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy at the University of Cambridge.

Over the past year, I have greatly enjoyed my time with the Grass Valley and Nevada City Rotary clubs. I cherish the inquisitive questions of members about my research and the tradition of happy/sad bucks! I also appreciate joining dinners with the Cambridge Sawston club and learning about members’ diverse life paths.

For my research at Cambridge, I developed a new audit to assess the ethics and legality of police use of facial recognition in the UK. I applied this audit to three British police deployments and found that they failed to meet the minimum standards for the governance of the technology.

This research aligns with Rotary's work in peacebuilding and conflict prevention by revealing the risks and harms of facial recognition and by informing tech policy in a manner that mitigates discrimination and promotes peace.

With Rotary’s support, I traveled to South Korea for the ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency, where I presented my research and connected with other scholars.

With my interest in advancing justice in the digital age, I will pursue a master’s in Sociology at Stanford University. This will build upon my understanding of the social aspects of technology and my experiences made possible through Rotary’s generosity!

Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI)
Re-Launching, Re-Imagined!
Training Leaders Needed!

RLI is a three-part leadership development program designed for Rotarians by Rotarians.   Its mission is to strengthen Rotary Clubs through high quality leadership education along with Rotary knowledge and perspective about where Rotary has been, where it is now and a vison of what Rotary can be.  Sessions are interactive (and fun!), based upon guided discussion, idea sharing and hands-on activities.

As the program has been dormant for a time, we are re-establishing and expanding our Training Cadre.  This will enable us to offer sessions in a variety of formats throughout the District, both online and in person.  We invite you to consider joining RLI!

The first information session for Training Leaders will be virtual on September 7th, 5:30 pm, followed by training on the curriculum itself, date TBD.

Registration for the information session is on the District website calendar and below.
